President’s day is a nice time to take a long vacation, spend a day with the family, or just treat yourself to a day of pampering. It does have a habit of sneaking up on you, though, especially since it’s the first day off since the holidays. While not everyone is guaranteed to have the holiday off from work, there are a good number of us who are lucky enough to. If you haven’t yet made plans for President’s day, here are a few last-minute things to do this presidents day in the Sacramento area.

1.    Take a Long Weekend in the Outdoors

Tahoe, Yosemite, Clearlake

The three-day President’s day weekend is a great time to pack up the truck and head to higher ground. It’s not yet hot enough to melt the snow, and you can get in some quality skiing time with family and friends. If that’s not your thing, just head out camping and enjoy a bit of time away from technology. Because lord knows, we could all use a bit of that. Lake Tahoe is a clear winner for the most popular destination, but also consider Yosemite, Clearlake, or other nearby areas in the Sierra Nevada foothills to avoid the Tahoe traffic.

2.    Check Out a Brewery

visiting Sacramento brewery, American River Brewing. If the weather is right, President’s day could be the perfect time to catch a cold brew and some brief (yet coveted) rays of sunshine. Since California is finally seeing the end of its draught years, it’s great to enjoy the good weather and look forward to the warmer spring and summer nights to come. We like Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico, and it’s just an hour and a half away from Sacramento. If you want to stay closer, try American River Brewing CompanyW, Boneshaker, Track 7, Sudwerk, Ruhstaller, or New Helvetica.

3.    Take the Family to the Zoo

The Sacramento Zoo will still be open on President’s day, so bring the family down and share in an enjoyable, educational experience! You can also get discounted combo tickets when you go to both the Sac Zoo and Fairytale Town right next door.

4.    Help Clean Up Your Parks

We know that district one in Sacramento is hosting a President’s day park beautification event for 2017. The hosts provide the snacks, and you just bring yourself and some tools and help to weed, mulch, and trim and keep our parks looking beautiful. Check online to see if your district is hosting a similar event – or, better yet, put together one of your own with the local community!

5.    Celebrate a Late Valentine’s Day

If you didn’t have time during the week to celebrate a proper Valentine’s day, then use this long weekend to do so. Treat your special someone out to a movie, dinner, and night on the town. If you’re looking for a nice restaurant, we recommend Firehouse, Ella Dining Room and Bar, or The Kitchen. Make sure to call ahead and make reservations, if you can, to ensure you aren’t spending hours waiting for a spot while your bellies grumble.

6.    Go See Disney on Ice

Go to the Golden 1 Center and see Disney on Ice before it’s too late! Because why not? You’ll enjoy something with the whole family, and it will be especially fun for young kids. See characters from Toy Story, Frozen, Cars, the Little Mermaid, and many more.

7.    Check Out an Escape Room

Haven’t heard of an escape room before? Trust us, they’re awesome! An escape room is one giant puzzle-solving mystery, with different storylines for different ages. Whether you’re going with a bunch of teenagers, college students, middle schoolers, or even your adult coworkers, you won’t be disappointed. Essentially, you spend 60 minutes locked in a room trying to discover the mystery – and how to escape. You have to work together to solve the clues, get the answers, and make it out before the clock runs down. This is a great team building exercise that is also super fun along the way. There are a handful of escape rooms in Sacramento, including Enchambered, Escape Sacramento, and Skeleton Key Rooms, among others. Book online ahead of time – spots are limited.

Regardless of which activity you choose to pursue, there are plenty of things to do this President’s day in Sacramento and nearby areas. When all else fails, just make sure to make the most of your day off and enjoy the beautiful weather!
